North Coast 500

Information showing paintings, works in progress, completed works and “Our” book about the  North Coast 500

An exhibition about the “North Coast 500” was an exciting proposition from “Castle Gallery” in Inverness , and there was no debate whether it was going to happen or not! I love Scotland, so YES PLEASE!  As it all turned out a very good friend and I planned a book together, and so it came together for us to make a book “as we find it” style or approach about the North Coast 500, or Route 500 as it’s also known as, the reference material for me now a dual purpose trip and writing material of course for Josh. As luck would have it, Storm Hector reared its head last year when we were on the road which spiced it up a little (our family style tent weathered it perfectly while “proper” tents founds their owners bailing out into cars and pods), and provided some good reference and writing material for both of us. It was a great trip and we enjoyed the whole travel experience (with plenty of road food…extremely important wherever you go), with not too many midges and great scenery of course.

Our book is called “North Coast 500 Midges And All” and I have made a section here that you can check in for updates on its progress for release and any other info.

Any future and private works I will include here, which will also be found in the “Shop” section of this website. I do take Commissions and you may contact me through this site or email [email protected] to discuss anything.

Any paintings that are in Castle Gallery you may contact them for any interest that you have for them. Please check to see the selection that is in the gallery http://www.castlegallery.co.uk/vernon-jones.html

“Wave at Clashnessie”

This was a lovely beach that we came across while touring the route, so off I ran with my camera to get reference. Its always refreshing to see that clear water as a wave lifts up and tips over and the beach was beautifully clean. Sky first. In this sky I wanted to...

“Impression of the Highlands”

I wanted to simply make an impression based on 2 sketches that came as an inspiration. I didn't wanted to create a real place either and was unsure where this one would go. It took a day almost of thinking and waiting for direction on it, and once I got that thought...

“Tree near Inchnadamph”

We came across this great scene and it was crying out to be painted! I love the simplicity, just a tree standing by itself in the Scottish Highlands. Creating a watercolour of this prompted another painting, this time emphasis on creating an interesting watercolour...

“The Crest of Victoria Falls”

The start to this painting has been very expressive as I wanted to get an energy inside it. Victoria Falls is a very beautiful place, and I have a watercolour of the "full thing", so thought about doing a detail since I had to investigate it thoroughly when I was...

“Ben Hope from Kyle of Tongue”

With this painting I wanted to do something a little different, something that I had done with the seascape work and wanted to see if it would translate. I like working in this way very much, it takes a little time as ideas and inspirations need to come, answers to...

“Storm Hector reaches Ullapool”

The advance of Storm Hector was upon us, the wind blowing straight across the sea into the camp ground creating some problems for some campers, happy to say not for us even though the tent was not in any way streamlined! However, it did kick up the waves a bit and I...

“View across the Applecross Bay”

Just a few buildings appear in this composition with beautiful colours, seaweed and mountainside. General mapping out beginning with a simple pencil drawing and colour applied with a spatula.  Here I started adding some details of the seaweed pieces. Now adding the...

“Loch Sheildaig and distant mountains”

This was another beautiful place that deserved to be painted, moody skies and distant mountains . In my mind today, actually from yesterday, was to create some very expressive pieces. I began by making a pencil plan of where the main components, then set to work with...

“Buachaille Etive Mor”

This mountain was one that was seen at many different viewpoints as we went around it while we travelled on. Very Impressive. It means  "The herdsman of Etive". At the very beginning, some colours blocked in. The next layer of oils...i decided to change the colour of...

“Glen Coe”

Passing through the beautiful Scottish landscape you probably will see this place, or somewhere similar. It is not on the North Coast 500, but its an incredible place, famous too for the right reason for its incredible beauty. Its going in!!  This is to a level where...

“Rogie Falls”

This area is very beautiful with the falls and everything around it. I have concentrated on the main falls in this location for this painting. The first part of this painting is the prepare a black gesso surface to work from instead of the white. You have to make a...

“Golden wave at Ullapool”

At Ullapool my friend and I got the full blast of wind across the campgrounds where we stayed,  storm "Hector". Good thing was it whipped up the sea and there were some nice waves I managed to capture during "Golden Hour". The canvas is first prepared by applying a...

Watercolour paintings and pencil drawings

A selection of Watercolours and pencil drawings  that I have completed for book Illustrations about the N.C. 500 and will feature in the show. "Victoria Falls" 23cm x 17cm Watercolour "Deer at Applecross browsing the leaves" 10cm x 17cm Watercolour "Kessock Bridge"...

“Sangobeg Bay towards Loch Eriboll and Whiten Head”

Coming down over a hill opened up this wonderful bay full of colour. It's Sangobeg Bay and in the distance is Whiten Head with Loch Eriboll in between.  The sky has been blocked in and details added to the clouds. The next step was the sea, with quite a few tonal...

“John O Groats”

It was great timing to see a boat coming into the harbour at John O Groats on a lovely day.  At this point the whole of the painting has been blocked in and details added to all areas, sorry I forgot to get pictures to this point. Adding grass details. The grasses to...

“View from where the River Hope enters Loch Hope”

When we came across this Loch I had to run down to it and get some reference for this painting. The place is right beside Loch Eriboll which in turn is near to Durness, as as the title indicates where the River Hope enters the Loch.  The initial drawing is made and...

“Panorama at Duncansby Stacks”

The Stacks, when you see these it's an amazing sight to behold.  The first stage of this painting was to get the sky blocked in with the clouds and to block in the sea. Work has been done to the sea, with cliffs added after the main of the sky has been completed....

“Duncansby Stacks” 50cm x 50cm

The Stacks are found on the North East coast and are spectacular! I am working on this square format, something more expressive for this painting. These are sections showing the first layer of paint. From here I began to add some forms, blocking in the stacks with...

“Highland stream near Rhiconich”

A beautiful mountain stream that we found along the road, so many sights like this.  I had a lot of fun with this painting up to this point, working in a semi loose fashion to get the feeling of the elements, the texture of the land. I apologise for the lack of photos...

“Deer browsing the leaves at Applecross”

This is a painting of a deer trying to eat leaves from the trees near to a camp ground. Beautiful to see this deer up close. The main objective after the initial drawing was to block in the basic layout. The field in the back ground added and some leaf work. Adding...

“Bird Haven Near to Duncansby Stacks”

On the way to "the stacks" you are going to see a lot of birds perched on these cliff walls, I managed to see some nice shots and this was amongst my favourites.  I have blocked in the grass and the sea areas to this canvas, and now working on the details of the sea....

“Tree at Applecross”

This tree, for me, was a lovely sight. A lone tree standing up to all the weather the Highlands could throw at it. I have already blocked in the sky and the land, now adding the tree and the details to follow. You can see the details of the sea and the waves appearing...

Small paintings and sketches

These small paintings have a dual purpose; to get the idea of the image and also to sort the colours out. They make painting in their own right of course. This image comes from a beautiful view across the bay here. Ullapool...a little artistic license used for the...
